Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir arrived in Turkiye on Monday for a two-day official visit, state media reported, as Pakistan and Turkiye continue to strengthen their long-standing strategic and defence partnership.
Warm Welcome on Arrival
Citing security sources, Radio Pakistan reported that Field Marshal Munir received a warm welcome upon landing in Turkiye. State broadcasters said the visit would include a series of high-level engagements with the country's senior political and military figures, though further details of the itinerary were not officially released.
Focus on Defence Cooperation and Regional Security
According to officials, discussions during the visit are expected to center on strengthening military-to-military ties, deepening defence collaboration, and reviewing the current regional security landscape. The trip comes as Pakistan and Turkiye look to expand cooperation in areas of shared strategic interest.
Continuing a Pattern of High-Level Exchanges
The visit follows a meeting last month at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, where Turkish Land Forces Commander General Metin Tokel held talks with Field Marshal Munir on regional security and avenues to expand bilateral defence ties. During that visit, General Tokel also met with Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu.
Pakistan and Turkiye maintain close political, economic, and defence relations, and both countries are part of the R-4 diplomatic framework alongside Egypt and Saudi Arabia, formed to coordinate positions on regional crises.
Context: A Region in Flux
Field Marshal Munir's visit to Ankara comes shortly after he traveled to Tehran to attend the funeral of Iran's late Supreme Leader alongside Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and amid his continued involvement in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran following recent tensions in the region.
